Horween Chromexcel is a renowned leather produced by the Horween Leather Company, a Chicago-based tannery established in 1905. Known for its rich character, durability, and versatility, Chromexcel (often abbreviated as CXL) is one of the most iconic leathers in the world, widely used in high-quality footwear, wallets, belts, and other leather goods.
It’s a combination-tanned leather, meaning it undergoes both chrome tanning and vegetable retanning. The chrome tanning process gives it softness and durability, while the vegetable retanning—using a proprietary blend of bark extracts—adds fullness, enhances patina potential, and contributes to its distinctive feel. What sets Chromexcel apart is its "hot-stuffing" process, where the leather is infused with a secret blend of natural oils, waxes, and greases (including food-grade beef tallow and cosmetic-grade beeswax). This gives Chromexcel its signature "pull-up" effect—when bent or stretched, the leather lightens as the oils shift, adding depth and personality over time.
